Visual Metaphor Reflection

Visual Metaphor

Concept :

The concept that Nartay and I was going for was the feeling of isolation and loneliness in New York City. This concept of ours were inspired by the unexpected turn of events for us and our first year at NYU. Since we were both supposed to be at Shanghai, we did not expect to be stuck in New York. However, at first, this did not seem like a bad idea. We were going to be studying freshman year in one of the greatest, most dynamic cities in the world. What could there possibly be for us to complain about? However, we did not realize how isolated and lonely we were going to feel this semester. With so many students in Shanghai, and some people not living on campus, there weren’t really any NYUSH students. Although there were a few, we all did our own thing and learned how to be very independent. Also as if we were learning how to adapt to a foreign environment all over again. However, this of feeling isolated and living a boring cyclical life seems ironic when we are surrounded by loud music, entertainment, and the bright city lights.

Process:

  1. For the audio, we focused on the sounds of the city. For example, the sirens, soft mumbles, and the rain. In addition, we pulled a small part from the story, “A Day” by Ding Ling, in which it talks about how the character felt like she was living a repetitive life. She also felt felt lost and isolated even though she was living in Shanghai ( also a very entertaining and dynamic city).
  2. Nartay and I used different clips from each other since we have a very different style from each other. I wanted to show the glamorous and enjoyable life everyone knows about in New York. Later on, I wanted to use clips of washing dishes and just breaking down because behind the picture perfect city lays a city in which it is very emotionally wearing. The city is very fast pace, sometimes feeling as if we cannot keep up. I wanted to depict a behind the scenes kind of vibe to show how New York can sometimes be romanticized leading people to not be aware of the common mental breakdowns and depression that can very commonly occur.
  3. The the thing I struggled with the most was probably using the audio to really drive the project. Rather , I think I focused too much on the visual representation itself.

Conclusion:

If I had more time, I would probably pay attention to the color of the clips I filmed since the clips together seemed to really connect and depict the idea very well.

At presentation day:

The main feedback itself was how in the audio, the sounds seemed to be mumbly. But, I wanted this because I wanted it to kind of be “internal thoughts” and “internal battles” that people have when they have a mental breakdown.
