- Concept
My concept was inspired by my life and how I felt during tenth grade. I played tennis my whole life and really loved the sport. I fell in love with the sport because I was very passionated with it and that was why I put a lot of time and effort in it. I loved the feeling of being surrounded my my teammates whether we won or lost. However, after making it on to varsity, my perspective changed. My coach was very big on winning and carrying on the tradition of making it to playoffs. Therefore, we played to win and this caused many of us to stress out. As for myself, I never did well under pressure. I lost interest for the sport, and this was a time where I really was lost in life because I didn’t know what to do. The only passion I knew and loved was tennis, was I ready to give that up?
2. Process
- The sounds I used was a chime I had laying around in my house and used that to imitate the sound of an alarm to represent the beginning of the day. Then I had sounds of water and me starting the car engine. Lastly, the sound I had was the sound of the tennis balls. I recorded that sound at practice and it was indoors at a tennis bubble so it was much louder and echoed. One of the problems I had encountered was recording the tennis ball sound because I had to figure out how to position the phone since if it was positioned too close to floor level, there would be an emphasis on the ball hitting the court. But I wanted to record the general sound of people hitting tennis balls and some of the grunting that occurs.
- I would say the biggest challenge I faced was the speed of the sound. I wanted to change the speed to a slower speed for the end of the recording to represent a longer day in order to relate back to my inspiration that everyday was very repetitive and the hours felt like eternity even though it was just a two hour practice. So I definitely had to play around with the speed a little bit before I got to what I liked. I wanted the last sound of the water running to be long and the water drops to be denser to represent how the days are so long are more so create a sense of me contemplating (similar to the idea of shower thoughts).
- Conclusion
If I had more time, I would probably change how long each recording it was and make them shorter so I could have more than just two repetitions. After the feedback I received from the day of presentation, I would like to change the order of the first part of the recording to the sound of tennis balls rather than the alarm clock because the two repetitions in the recording are identical. According to others, I could definitely play around with he sound even more especially the sound of tennis balls because it is a very powerful sound.
