RAF in Iraq and Sharjah v.1

This is the first of two photograph albums of Royal Air Force Leading Aircraftman C. J. Sainty, who served in Iraq and the Middle East during World War II. The first 32 photographs are taken during Sainty’s period in India and show Bombay and the military camp at Colaba. During the Anglo-Iraq war of 1941, Sainty is transferred to the RAF base at Habbaniya and the photographs show Baghdad and the aircraft base and its residents. A special section entitled “The Fortunes of War. May 1941. R.A.F. v Rebels” is devoted to the Battle of Habbaniya and shows British and Iraqi tanks, guns and fallen aircraft, including a German Messerschmidt Bf 110. A few graphic photos of limbs and cadavers in the desert show the grim human toll of the war.
We extend our gratitude to Dr C. D. E. Morris, Honorary Secretary, Archivist & Editor, RAF Habbaniya Association who generously shared their expertise for the cataloguing of this album.

RAF in Iraq and Sharjah v.2

This is the second of two photograph albums of Royal Air Force Leading Aircraftman C. J. Sainty, who served in Iraq and the Middle East during World War II. The second album shows many pictures of the cities of Baghdad and Basra. The photographs of Ashar, the heart of Basra, show daily life in this ancient city: a boatman, policemen in long coats, a barber, a craftsman, machine shop workers, a bread maker, a copper beater, long hand crafted river boats and a camel caravan. Photographs of a trip to northern Iraq show daily life in the country and endless vistas. The album concludes with various photographs of camp life at the RAF base in Sharjah. Accompanying the two albums are the aircraftman’s own manuscript colour drawings – 11 pages comprising an immaculate illustration of the construction of incendiary bomb components and functionality, as well as several poems. – Loss to some tissue guards, scant few photographs creased. One photograph appears to be missing. Otherwise in good condition.
Please note: This material has been digitized in its entirety and contains racist and culturally insensitive remarks.

Royal Flying Corps – Egypt in the 1910s

This photograph album contains a collection of photographs of scenes in Egypt compiled by an unidentified Royal Flying Corps member in 1916–19. The photographer was quite possibly assigned to the Number 14 Squadron that assisted T. E. Lawrence in the Arab Revolt (1916–18). The album also yields first-hand snapshot images of World War I aircraft, including several crashed aeroplanes. Interesting is the photograph of a destroyed tank, since only a few of these were deployed in the Middle East during WWI. The final 58 photographs show the compiler’s home life in Great Britain.

This photograph album shows glimpses of life in Egypt during wartime, particularly in Cairo and Alexandria and includes a few images from Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Jaffa in Palestine. A heavy gun on large wheels and surrounded by a sandbag wall, situated at Aboukir according to the caption verso of image, suggests this as the pilot’s base. Included in this album are 4 photographs taken of the demonstrations in Alexandria during the Egyptian Revolution of 1919. Other views of Alexandria include the Boulevard Ramleh, street scenes with more horse drawn carts and trains at the Alexandria Station. A scant few scenes pertain to the war, showing two types of aircraft, sandbag barricades, a large army truck and artillery.
