In AHC AD-139 you will work on three small projects in the final stretch of the course.
Remember also to go back to your digital narrative and revise it in a version 2.0. You should reflect on the things you have learned this term as well as what new perspectives the digital humanities have offered you for thinking.
(1) The first is your interpretation of the collective map of the Foods of Abu Dhabi.
You should have recorded approximately 20 sites total. This means we should have several hundred points. One way of getting some data from the restaurants is to use the Browse Street View Images in Google Maps. Many of these have restaurant interior views where you can count the tables.
You should produce a blog posting in addition to a few maps in which you tell a story about the class-created data. Are their patterns in the kinds of restaurants? the prices of the restaurants? How does the way that you explored Abu Dhabi’s food cultures differ from that of the other class members? What are suggestions for pursuing this project with a class in the Spring semester?
One of those maps should be produced as a browser map like this one. We will look at how you can make this from some simple code. The rest can be embedded iframes in your blog postings.
The datashare from our collective data collection project is https://web.fulcrumapp.com/shares/8d9d20b207082c43.csv
Go to http://djwrisley.com/maps/foodsAD/ and go to view -> Developer -> Developer Tools and then click on source. You can copy this code and change it as you like for your own index.html file in a folder like this: student.hosting.nyu.edu/maps
(2) The second and the third are of your choice. It is completely fine for the projects to grow out of your corpus project, or even one of your blog postings.
Tips for your projects:
How “finished” should my second and third project be?
The goal of project-based assessment in this course is that you bring together many of the skills and theories to which you have been exposed over the semester. I would highly encourage you to cite the authors we have read as secondary material. The projects should also have a visual component (illustrating steps of the visualization). The projects do not need to be finished, in the sense that you have carried out all analysis possible and understood everything about them, but they should comment thoroughly on their current state of completion. Remember that one of the most important things we have learned over the semester is how thinking about knowledge creation in digital environments highlights what we do not know, just as much as what we know, and how we know. You should think about the project as you would a short paper, explaining for your readers how you got there, what you have been able to see and where you could go if there were more time.
Remember, however, that this project is a blog. It could be revised in the future. It is full of mash-ups, digital essai-s, an unfinished strands. You can think about this through the blog that Prof. Levine mentioned in the DH meetup #4.
Where should I publish my second and third project?
I suggest publishing the content of your other two projects as separate pages on your domain space. I would also suggest giving them a succinct name, so that the tabs are clear to read. You might want to use the parent/child tab function so that you have the project tabs “stacked.”
Make sure that your projects are well documented, contain references to the materials you have used (in a works cited table at the end if non-electronic, and with embedded links). You can and should have some screen captures. If it is a map, I would suggest a live embed or page as above in #1.
How long should my project writeup be?
The project writeup should be a bit longer than a regular blog posting. I recognize fully that building a network or a map or a piece of 3d content is a time consuming process. You will be assessed based both on the quality and depth of the digital objects as well as how you write about them.
Please upload the dataset that you create and provide a link for public download.
