About Adaptive Force

We are a group of students at New York University and took the course “Developing Assistive Technology” in the fall semester, 2020.

Throughout the semester, we worked with our client, Jose Hernandez, to create his game controller to satisfy his needs using Xbox Adaptive Controller. We had a weekly meeting to catch up on the progress and make sure we were on the same stage.

Our challenge was to conduct all meetings and complete fabrications remotely. Luckily, we had access to the facility at ITP (Interactive Telecommunications Program), and we could create the final product with high quality.

This website provides our experience with people interested in creating a game controller and fabricating any electric device. Our guide is step-by-step and easy to follow instructions, but do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We are happy to talk about our journey and help people who need us!

We really appreciate help from our client, Jose, and course instructors, Amy Hurst and Anita Perr.

About Team

Jose Hernandez | Community partner

NYC Advocacy Coordinator
President, NYC Chapter
United Spinal Association

Jose is an avid gamer who sustained a spinal cord injury at the age of 15 years old and leaving him tetraplegic with limited movement in his hands. After playing video games for many years with an arcade stick, the industry introduced dual analog sticks which made it nearly impossible for him to continue playing video games. Fast-forward many years and with the help of the students of NYU they helped create a set of buttons to supplement other adaptive equipment.
