This is not a super detailed post, just an interesting connection with Kevin’s presentation on what materials were used before the invention of plastic. I went to the Louvre this afternoon and was able to see so many examples of some of the materials that Kevin discussed, along with many others that I just wanted to share them in this post:
An engraved book and a storage case both made from ivory. I was a little shocked by the elaborate detail in carvings, but this highlights how malleable ivory is as a crafting material. The book is from France (1350-1375) and the case is from the time of Byzantine empire, specifically Constantinople (950-1000).
A old 1697 globe made out of : wood, copper, paper, plaster and canvas. From Venice Italy.
An Edo Bronze head from the Kingdom of Benin (1700’s).
This figure is called “Salt cellar with Portuguese soldiers and a caravan” and is made from ivory. Also from the Kingdom of Benin, made around 1600.
Ceremonial daggers from Northen India (1870). I thought they were made of ivory but they are actually made of a material called nephrite (and decorated with gold and gems).
