In making this project we sought to capture how plastic waste remains in the environment nearly forever. We decided to represent this aspect by relating it to cockroaches. This is because there is this perception that cockroaches can withstand anything and survive forever. As in they were alive at the time of the dinosaurs; dinosaurs are extinct, roaches still roam. There is also this idea that if nukes leveled a city, just wait for everything to settle and you will see roaches crawling through the fallout.
We executed this concept by making a cockroach sculpture out of a plastic bottle:
The most difficult aspect of making this project was finding the best way to represent a cockroach from plastic.
If we would do this project again or expand on it we would make multiple roach sculptures and possibly hang them from the ceiling. We would also focus more on the aspect of light and the casted shadow. If we hung the roaches from the ceiling next to a light source, they would cast a large shadow on the ground. This could represent that while most people see discarding plastic as something small and insignificant, its casted effect builds up and becomes massive.
