Responsible Leisure by Fanisi and Ward
presentation: Sculpture Presentation and Gallery
I worked alongside Fanisi to create a sculpture that represented the way our plastic is harming our oceans and the sea creatures that live there. The title of our piece is called Responsible Leisure to bring awareness to those who relax by the beach and inform them about the harm they are causing by being irresponsible and lazy. We created two pieces, the first one was a jellyfish and the second one was a beach chair to represent the place where people litter the most at the beach. We used water bottles and water bottle caps to create the jellyfish head and tentacles. Inside the jellyfish, we put in all the smaller pieces that we didn’t use and other objects found at the beach to represent how sea creatures digest all the plastic waste we leave. The second object, being the beach chair, was made to show the viewers where we collected the plastic and that this place of leisure is actually a place where plastic waste is found the most leaving it to harm our oceans.
Some challenges we faced from the very start, up to the end of this journey were, finding enough plastic to start with but once we got closer to the places people sit we found more. Secondly, trying to properly stick plastic strands onto another plastic took some time and effort but worked out in the end. Finding a concept came fairly easily after thinking of the morning we had collecting at the beach but we did brainstorm a little bit too.
I feel like we could improve our installation pieces by maybe creating more sea creatures out of plastic and showing the damage that happens to them after living with our plastic in their homes. It could end up being a whole set hanging from the ceiling and a pathway of plastic could represent the water on the floor since our oceans are filled with mostly plastic.
