In producing a plastic sculpture I sought to reflect the vision for our relationship with everything plastic. If there were a spectrum representing the age of a synthetic plastic, on one end we would have the our single use plastics – the food packaging, the single-use forks… On the other end, we would have synthetic objects that last with us (our beyond) in perpetuity. Our goal should be to have as much of our use cases as possible on the right end of the spectrum. This piece reflects what it means to achieve that.
In looking at everyday objects that last long, we see they’re functional. They are everyday objects. They are neverday objects too. We have items we keep for long for their form, their aesthetic. Our ideal synthetic materials is functional and/or has good form. It is good design.
The piece is made from a recycled plastic water bottles. They are given a new visual feel by being morphed into an aesthetic, flower looking, group of orbs. They work together to acts as a lamp light diffuser. They’re coupled with a discarded electronic component to serve an everyday use of proving an aesthetic lighting to a room.
The usage of energy in the form of light – instead of a just a pure plastic sculpture – reflect the intent that plastic and everything synthetic has its place in our techno sphere and the end goal for synthetics should not be elimination but responsible usage, even in abundance. It’s all possible with GOOD DESIGN.
