Caught Red Handed
When we went to Park Hyatt to collect trash we noticed it was rather clean and some of the guides informed us that turtles were quite an attraction for guests. These turtles along with various discussions we have had in class inspired our trash sculpture ‘Caught Red Handed’. This art piece is meant to represent the impact humans have had and continue to have on the beauty of our natural environment. Our group made a short stop-motion video to depict how small bits of trash/plastic that human’s discard on the beach build up to deteriorate our once beautiful beach. Below is the attachment to our stop-motion video:

It showed how the plastic waste we produce and discard in the ocean gets caught up and swallowed by various creatures eg. the turtle within our sculpture. We have also attempted to show how sea creatures are being displaced.
This image shows the turtle found within our sculpture that once was happy and minding its own business until it swallowed plastic straws thrown away by human beings. Such plastic is swallowed by countless sea creatures everyday, causing them digestive and breathing issues that could ultimately lead to their death.
Although we enjoyed making this sculpture we did face difficulties figuring out how to make the various body parts for the creatures, for example the head of the turtle (we ended up using a spoon). We also managed to use a water bottle to make the body of the fish within our sculpture with some minor adjustments.
My key takeaway from this project was to be more open towards using unconventional methods to accomplish my goals. We faced numerous issues with the glue not holding and pieces of our sculpture falling apart but finally we managed to use some trash we found to serve as a medium through which we would glue different plastics together.
We did not have proper access to a well equipped camera and lighting so we were not able to produce a high resolution video. We had to make use with what we had (3 iPhones) for both the shooting and the lighting. I would have loved to have a better shot video with higher quality. Moreover, had we found more trash at Park Hyatt we could have incorporated it into our sculpture but that was not the case.
To conclude, the aim of our project was simply to raise awareness of the impacts humans have on our beautiful beaches and the creatures that come along with it. Our project further aims to make people more conscious of their actions. It may just be one wrapper or one juice box to you but as these pieces of trash accumulate it could mean no beach for us all.
