When I read more about plastic in clothing I went into my closet to find a lot of my clothes are made of polyester or nylon and now I realized that not only our waste but now our clothes are part of the problem that we have going on. I read that most new fabrics are made of plastic and this plastic isn’t just harming our earth and oceans because of the tiny invisible particles that come out of it. This happens when we wash our clothes and tiny threads that drain out of our washing machines and into the ocean. Sea creatures eat these plastics and people eat these sea creatures so they are eating their own clothing whether they know it or not and that is so disturbing to me. I read that “one washing load of clothes could be shedding up to 17 million tiny plastic fibres.”
These are called microfibres and they are a plastic-based thread even thinner than hair. Some companies claim their clothing are environmentally friendly because they use recycled bottles to create which helps with plastic pollution but not with the fact that this material is harming our oceans. “Microfibres have been found in air, rivers, soil, drinking water, beer and table salt.” As well as being harmful to our planet it is also bad for our bodies. This material absorbs easily so before it reaches the ocean there’s a huge probability that they absorbed the toxins from detergents and fire-proofing chemicals which threaten our liver, kidneys and nervous systems. Learning about this I realized it’s not only what you eat that can harm you but also what you put on your body which is anxiety-inducing and an issue that needs to be solved.
This is a thread made of a bunch of microfibres that can be found in clothes, curtains carpets and more.
