Plastic Fashion

Learning that many of our clothing items consist mostly of plastic was shocking. I already knew that some materials used for clothes contained plastic, but I did not imagine the extent of it. I thought that some amount of plastic could be added to clothes in order to aid the material or add certain qualities to it. I never imagined that plastic would be added as a main component for it’s cheap cost.

I think that the fast fashion problem has a big psychological component, so the solution to it has to be psychological. On the one hand, many people have this mindset that they need to get new clothes or change it up regularly. This mindset can have many causes but it is definitely being aided by big fast fashion companies. 

Fast fashion companies also use manipulative techniques and vague labeling in order to make consumers think that said companies are environmentally friendly and “green”. This puts the consumer’s mind at ease, which makes them feel no reason to change. 

I think this problem can be solved by changing the mindset of people and making them more aware of the reality of fast fashion. I think that we have produced a lot of clothes already, and the ideal situation would be to reuse the same clothes and adapt our mindset to accept that.
