Going to the beach to collect plastic waste was always something I wanted to properly do because whenever I went to the beach I would always be frustrated by the garbage around me and it would leave me spending a few minutes picking up what I see around me but not around the whole beach. The experience was shocking because we found way more than just plastic. When we first started we barely found a bottle cap or two but when we went on searching for longer we found cigarette butts, water bottles, styrofoam, wood that looks like it came off a boat maybe, a long piece of thick rope and so much more. Something that surprised me was how these objects were so close to the people on the beach yet no one paid any notice to them. It isn’t that hard to pick up a few things along your path on your way back but people just don’t seem to care. Below are just some of the items we found.
This is definitely something I really would want to do again and maybe invite a few friends to join because the more people helping out the better. Seeing so much garbage onshore and half-buried in the sand really got me wondering about what I would find if I could go into the ocean and collect trash. I would hate to think that sea creatures are living their lives surrounded by garbage but I know it is our reality. Getting the ocean cleaned up should really be a priority and I think that when people see more people trying to clean up the beach they will start to notice the importance of such an act. Multiple people such as life guards and those enjoying the beach spoke about how wonderful it is that we are doing this and I hope they take that as a sign to help in their own way one day too.
