Adele Hatha is the cofounder of the start-up called “Precious Plastic Shanghai”, whose goal is to provide solutions and educate the public about the issue of plastic waste management. I found her talk and presentation to be enlightening, particularly about the various uses of plastic that has been thrown away. For example, she showed how one of her colleagues managed to use waste plastic as a wrapper to act as a protective wrap around charging cables. This seemed to be quite ingenious as the lightning connector for macs are commonly known for their tear a few months into usage. Additionally, the various designs and projects they have implemented have provided me with inspiration pertaining to my own personal projects for the class.
Adele also shared her story about how she established this start-up and the struggles and obstacles she had to overcome. Her story emphasized the importance of perseverance and passion as she had to fund the project with her own personal income as grants for such type of work is quite uncommon in China. Additionally, it helped me realize that if one seriously wants to make a drastic change in one’s lifestyle, one needs to go above and beyond to stay committed to that goal. This is what Adele had done when she quit her job to pursue this path and I found it to be quite admirable and motivating. Seeing how she encompassed her specialty and strength of material design to her journey has made me rethink about how I too should try to find ways to contribute that involve my background in programming to succeed in making a difference.
