Adele Foucart, co-founder of Precious Plastic Shanghai, was the guest speaker today. She gave an interesting talk about her experience with Precious Plastic Shanghai, from its beginnings as a side event to its current status as a full-fledged corporation. This reminds me of the Margaret Mead quote that was introduced to us earlier in the class “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed individuals can change the world. In fact, it’s the only thing that ever has.”.
In order to test all of the different prototypes, the development team was required to retool and tweak the product to fit perfectly to shred the plastic. It was very surprising to note that the motors were more effective using bikes which are fun and more sustainable. An interesting addition to the presentation was a range of unique approaches to starting an innovative project. The precious plastic shanghai is remarkably cost-effective, innovative, and creative which inspires us to cooperate with them and create new destinations. There are various ideas they had to implement in order to deal with their unforeseen problems that showed how many times their approach to waste management is reliant on being open minded, like the cycle shredder as mentioned previously.
Another concept that I found quite informative by the speaker today is to come to it from our own strengths and desires when adopting new ideas. In addition, we can work with those who come from their own fields to carry out the project. This project gives me so much hope in a more sustainable and smart future.
