An interdisciplinary research space dedicated to the intersection of disability and technology.
We foster collaboration between assistive technology users, engineers, designers, educators, artists, occupational and physical therapists, speech language pathologists, and disability consultants. The Ability Project is open to all NYU students and faculty looking to create inclusive systems, design human-centered projects, and further understanding and research in the area of ability. Our projects are intended to be ongoing, multidisciplinary, and client-facing, with a strong emphasis on open source practices, partnerships with advocacy groups and agencies, and experiential learning opportunities for students across NYU.
The Ability Project was established in 2013 with a Seed Grant and through a collaboration between Steinhardt’s Occupational Therapy Department, Tandon’s Integrated Design & Media Programs, and Tisch’s Interactive Telecommunications and to synthesize assistive technology and adaptive design research initiatives across the broader NYU campus. By pulling together various entities, working in the area of disability and technology, we have created a dynamic framework for carrying out a range of projects.
The Ability Project is located in suite 316 of 370 Jay Street in Brooklyn. You can learn more about our space on our navigation and mobility guide.
