FAQ

So… what’s this course all about anyway?
This is a two-semester course that runs in Fall 2019 and Spring 2020. Two sections of eleven students each – one section based in New York and one in Buenos Aires – meet simultaneously each semester by way of enhanced video-conferencing. Students spend one of the two semesters in either New York or Buenos Aires, learning about the history and politics of each city, collecting geo-tagged data of the street and public art of various neighborhoods in each city, and then drawing comparisons and contrasts between both by way of GIS software and digital mapping.

I’m a student at NYU Shanghai or NYU Abu Dhabi. Can I participate?
Yes! And you will receive priority admission to study abroad in Buenos Aires in Fall 2019 and in New York in Spring 2020. We encourage you to reach out to your academic adviser for questions regarding this process.

Do I choose which semester I spend in Buenos Aires?
If you are an NYU Washington Square student, you can decide which semester to spend in Buenos Aires, either Fall 2019 or Spring 2020, in consultation with your academic adviser depending on your program of study. If you are an NYU Shanghai or an NYU Abu Dhabi student, you should plan to spend Fall 2019 in Buenos Aires and Spring 2020 in New York.

How many credits is the course?
4 credits each semester.

Do I need to apply to Study Away?
Yes. As you will be spending a semester abroad, you must apply through the NYU Office of Global Programs.  You will receive priority admission to NYU Buenos Aires and to NYU Washington Square by indicating in your application form that you intend to take this course. Please mind the following deadlines to apply for Study Away:  February 15 (priority); March 15 (regular). Note your interest in the course by noting “Art and Politics in the City” – IDSEM-UG 2013 (FALL) and IDSEM-UG 2014 (Spring)

Will this course count for my major?
Currently, this course is approved as an elective credit for Gallatin students and for students majoring in Interactive Media Arts through NYU Tisch and through NYU Shanghai.  However other schools and departments may also recognize it for elective credit. Please consult your academic adviser to find out if your major will count the course as part of your electives.

Do I need to commit to both semesters?
Yes. Students should plan to enroll in both semesters of the course, and plan to spend either the fall or the spring semester in Buenos Aires or in New York.

I’m a current first year student. Can I participate?
Yes! This opportunity is open to current first and second year students who will be sophomores and juniors in 2019-2020.
