Architecture Process (brief)

  1. NYU IT projects should follow Project Governance process, other projects outside of NYU IT may have their own process. Either project process should produce set of requirements and documents to be used in architecture.
  2. Request “Lead Architect” to join the project 
    • NYU IT projects may select in ProjTrak “Architect Needed? Yes”
  3. Work with Lead Architect to complete ADM Phases C-F
  4. Schedule ARB review
    • To be added to agenda email: its.architects@nyu.edu
    • Reviews occur each week Tuesday at following times:
      • 08:00 New York / Eastern time
      • 14:00 UTC
      • 17:00 Abu Dhabi time
      • 21:00 Shanghai time

NYU IT Project Governance process outlines the gating and phases needed to be completed. For convenience we have provided links to documents that would be best for preparing projects: 

NYU IT follows the The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) as means to develop architecture. Following is the Architecture Development Model (ADM) that explains the process used in areas of architecture.

Information & Tech Architecture (Lead Architect, Tech Lead, Project Owner)

Project managers, owners, and tech leads are required to work with the Lead Architect assigned to the project to complete the four Architecture Review Board (ARB) phases.

ADM Phase C: Data Architecture 

  • Authentication & Authorization (including Single Sign-on listed under standards section)
  • Update Data Catalog & Business Glossary (Data Catalog)
  • Initiate Security & Compliance review (Output can be seen in ARB Slack for Architects to review)

ADM Phase C: Application Architecture 

  • Application Interaction Matrix
  • Software Engineering diagram
  • System – Function Matrix

ADM Phase D: Technology Architecture 

  • Communications Engineering Diagram
  • Application/System/Technology Matrix

ADM Phase F: Migration Plan

  • Develop Test Plan
  • Update CMDB (Application & Integration Catalogs)
