Step 1
Inspiration
This project requires users to pump the device in order to load the full information of web pages. I think it is a successful interaction because users would receive the feedback once they pump. I assume users would like to get as much information as possible, so they will keep pumping.
I inspired by this project’s attitude toward technologies. The “traditional” way to load the web pages does not require effort by users, they only need to click using a mouse. However, this project reminds people of technology they are easy to ignore and take as granted. Energy consumption is also considered. With the rapid development of technology, we should be more cautious about it, and I think it is better to take a step back.
2.My Little Piece of Privacy by Niklas Roy
This project is a moving curtain that follows the passengers it detects. It was originally designed to protect the privacy of the store. Rather than using a curtain to cover the entire window, it is a small piece of the curtain with the capability of moving. However, it turns out to be unable to protect the store but becomes an attractive device because it would let the passengers notice the window and the store.
I inspired by this project’s interesting way of interaction. Even if the project’s effect is not as the designer expected, the smart way to realize the idea and the artistic expression through it makes the project successful from the perspective of interactive art creation.
The privacy issue is always a hot topic when discussing nowadays technology development. This project expresses the idea in a creative way. My understanding is, compare to the privacy protection technology we create and use, the awareness of privacy is more important. We need to notice the world we are in, and what privacy is at risk.
Successful Interactive Experience
By my definition, interaction is the process for multiple participants to directly send or receive the signal. Under this definition, the engaging and interesting process of send&receive signals contributes to a successful interactive experience. During my first group project, we found that the audio signal is better than the visual signal when receiving. In the second project (midterm project), I have learned that if the user needs to pay effort, he/she would be more engaged. My research proves this point. In Pump and Surf, the users also need to pay effort, in order to load the web pages. Edmonds raises a point that influence is better to describe the cases such as “an artwork has a memory of audience actions that is only used to affect the artwork’s behavior days or weeks later” than interaction (Edmounds, 2007). It inspires me that a good interaction experience should consider the “effect” of itself more than a one-time interaction.
